Vess Soda

Vess Grape Soda Pop Bottlecap“The Billion Bubble Beverage”

The Vess Beverage Company was founded by Vess Jones in 1916 in St. Louis, Missouri. Vess specialized in cola and fruit-flavored sodas that were sold primarily in the Midwest.

The formula for the popular orange-flavored soda “Whistle” was developed for the Vess Beverage Company by a Vess salesman named Charles Leiper Grigg in 1920. Grigg went on to invent 7Up and start The 7Up Company in 1929.

Some of the flavors of Vess soda were Cola, Cream, Grape, Blueberry, Fruit Punch, Strawberry and Blue Raspberry. From 1979 to 1981, Vess Beverages made and sold a non-carbonated chocolate-flavored drink called Chocolate. It didn’t sell very well and was discontinued. They modified the formula and released a chocolate drink once again, this time called Chocolate Fudge.

Vess Beverage was bought by the Toronto-based Cott Beverages, Inc. in 1994. They still manufacture Vess soda and today it is available in 27 different flavors.

I’m looking for the strawberry and orange flavors of Vess soda. Do you know which local St. Louis County stores sell these flavors?

  • Lorrayne

Does anyone have any idea on where to buy Vess Soda?

  • weaselsnap

    Dierbergs sells all flavors.

  • Lorrayne

Where is Dierbergs? I live by Joliet, Illinois

  • M_black

The only place I can find that sells most flavor is shop n save (st.Louis, Missouri)… Their orange is the best. Also, I can only find it by the can ($.31 a can), not in 6 or 12 packs.

Why  does vess put sodium in their can cola but their bottled cola is sodium free? I am diebetic and my doctor want me to limit my sodium intake. Recently vess cola in bottles is not available in the southern Il area. I have been all over and all the stores I have been to has cans only and I cant haqve the sodium. Where is the bottled no sodium vess cola?

  • http://www.retroplanet.com/ Retro Planet

That’s interesting. I know that sodium compounds are used to extend shelf life, but never realized that it’s different in cans than bottles, at least with this brand. I might suggest you call the company, or post to them on Facebook:

Did Vess stop making Diet Creme Vess?  I can’t seem to find it anywhere anymore.  I buy it by the case but it seems the stores (all of them) are out of it.  That is the only soda I will drink.

I just bought a 12 pack of Whistle at Dierbergs in Fenton. I think they had root beer in the 12 packs as well. And almost every flavor was available in individual cans. My favorites are Whistle and Cream soda, but I like all the flavors. On the Cola can, it says “great new taste.” I bought some and I think it tastes a lot like RC Cola. Funny since Cott Beverages makes RC.

I found a quart green Vess bottle buried behind my house in a bottle pile/trash pile, in Mt Bethel, Pa. The Vess company is said to have distributed  their product  quite far from here. Anyone know if they sold to stores in the Northeast?

  • Nancy

Found Vess Soda at the Grocery Outlet in Washington  State. I bought it because it was  a good price. But i have to say I’m not impressed. There is NO flavor to it. At all. At least not the Cream Soda. I have not tried the Strawberry I bought yet.

where can I find old vess cola in can with lou brock on the front of can
In the late 70′s Vess Beverages marketed a specialty drink called Brock a Pop which was a strawberry cherry vanilla drink sold only in cans, Brock a Pop was only available in that one flavor, only available in cans, and the only drink endorsed by Lou Brock with his picture on the can. Vess also marketed Brockabrellas for Lou at that time.
