Whoopee Pie Memories: Stoddard Twins

Black Moons Tin SignBlack Moons

Today Whoopee Pies are all the rage. I think Martha or Oprah recently blessed them, and now it seems everywhere I go I see pumpkin, peanut butter, gingerbread, red velvet and jumbo versions of whoopee pies.

When I was a kid they where called “black moons” and the black moons I remember most fondly are Stoddard’s Twins. These little black moons came two to a package with a little white cardboard tray and a plastic wrapper. The cakes where dense and the cream had a firm texture and had the slightest crunch of granulated sugar when you bit into them. I still crave the delicious taste and texture of Twins every time I see a TV show or magazine article about whoopee pies.

I am not sure, but I think they where made in Lowell, MA. My sister Karen has a friend who had some sort of connection with the family who made them. I have been bugging her for years to see if her friend could get a lead on the recipe but I think it is nowhere to be found.

Does anyone remember these delicious little cakes or Stoddard’s Bakery? Did they make any other products, and were they in Lowell? And most importantly, does anyone have a recipe close to the original Twins? Please blog in and let us know.

We called them black moons too.  I’ve got a great recipe from my mom who got it from an old edition of Good Housekeeping Cookbook.  They are so easy to make.  You could even make the filling ahead and save it to use the next day to fill and sandwich the cakes together.  She used to tint the filling pink for Valentine’s Day, green for St. Patrick’s or orange for Halloween.  The thunder is booming outside and it’s late so I’ll include the recipe on my Facebook page tomorrow.

I lived for stoddard twins, I have asked so many people if they remember them, and they can’t. I remember them from the late fifties, into the 60′s.
They were so good 2 small black moons, filled with white cream. I would love to taste them again. I think you’re right about the coming from Lowell. I do remember they were even Koshar. Odd for a little casholic girl to think of.

Yes. Stoddards bakery was in Lowell on Mammoth Rd next to the Fire Station. We used to get Twins fresh from the bakery on the was to the Pawtucket school which was two doors down. The “bakery ladies” would give you double cream filling sometimes.

Like you we have been searching for the recipe for the filling. No luck yet.

I remember my mother giving me a nickel before school, every day, to go to Gene’s variety in Lowell, MA, right next to the Morey School….I would get Stoddard’s Twins for 5 cents.  That was late 60′s.  Best ever.

Yes they where made in Lowell Mass. at Stoddard’s Bakery! The bakery belonged to Clayton and Vashti Stoddard, My Great Grandparents. The business survived the depression very well! My Grandparents and Great-aunts and uncle ran the bakery into the `70’s when they retired. Many times as a young adult I asked my Grandmother for the recipes and she would reply that it was for a 50 gallon mix and would be impossible to break down. None of my relatives have a clue to the recipes. In the bakery’s hay day they made individual pies, fruit squares and more! The “Twins” were distributed through out Mass., N.H. and I think into Maine. Spending many a Saturdays playing in the bakery watching them work is a fond and distant memory.
