Retro Images of the Week: Ovaltine Cup

Ovaltine Cup with Captain Midnight

In 1938 a radio program called “Captain Midnight” was first broadcast. It played on weekday afternoons and was originally sponsored by Skelly Gasoline. The star of the show was Captain Midnight, a WWI aviator whose mission was to defeat the Nazis.

Starting in 1940, Ovaltine became the Captain Midnight radio show sponsor. The radio program continued to be broadcast through December of 1949. In addition to radio, the Captain Midnight series was also brought to the big screen, television and comic books, keeping Captain Midnight alive through the 1950s. In the late 1980s he made an appearance again with the promotion of a few premiums being offered, but has yet to make a significant comeback. With the recent return of so many comic book characters to the big screen, it’s very likely Captain Midnight will be fighting for democracy again.

This cup was a Captain Midnight Ovaltine premium that could be sent away for during the 1950s. It reads, “Hot Ovaltine—The Heart of a Healthy Breakfast” and measures 3 1/8 inches high.
