Triple AAA Root Beer

Triple AAA Root Beer Bottlecap“Just Say ‘AAA’, Your Favorite Root Beer”

The Triple “AAA” Company was a root beer manufacturer that started in 1937. They supplied extracts and syrups to soft drink bottlers, having created their product to compete with other soft drink makers likes Hires and A & W. They were a small company that went out of business by the early 1970s. They promoted their root beer as “delicious, healthful and refreshing”. This bottlecap has their distinct octagon-shaped logo. There’s not much out there on them, so if you can add anything, we welcome your comments.

AAA had a plant in Liberal, Kansas during the 1960′s. They supplied gallon jugs of root beer concentrate you could buy and take home to add to water or soda water. This was the best root beer that I have ever had.

My first job was with “AAA”. My father and uncle both worked and retired there. I remember D.G. and going upstairs to his office when I was a kid… I loved the Root Beer ( that was free in the plant). It was a taste that hasn’t been duplicated since….A&W, Hires, and the rest can’t even get close to the taste of “Triple AAA”. I still have a small “AAA” Root Beer barrel (in working order) that my uncle made, and treasure it for those fond memories.

  • Burdette Pettit

I remember Him… My father was Bill Pettit and my uncle was “Dude” Brown… Why can’t they make it that way again???? Oh for the good life! I don’t know if the recipe was sold when DG passed away or it was forgotten, since only a few knew the actual recipe…wish I had it to make it for myself!!!!! If it was bought, I wish they’d bring it back! until then we have to settle for the crap that they make now that is tasteless in comparision.

  • S.Dowell

Would you happen to know what happened to the recipe for AAA? Our family use to be attached to it and we have missed it ever since it went away. You can call me or send me an e-mail. I probably have some more questions for you!

  • Burdette Pettit

I would sure like to know that recipe too, but I think it either went with D.G. or Aires, or  else some big company got a hold of it and shelved it so it wouldn’t make their product look bad.  The end of a great era ended when AAA did….

There was a AAA Root Beer stand/drive up in Joplin, MO. In the early 60′s. The store was in the shape of a giant, AAA root beer barrel. (cut in half with closed end, up.  AAA across barrel and concession/stand/building at bottom.) Does anyone else remember a AAA stand? Rootbeer served in frosty glass mugs, of course. Hamburgers and the like.

I AM ALSO A BIG AAA ROOT BEER FAN.  ABOUT 8 OR 10 YEARS AGO, I BOUGHT A AAA ROOT BEER SIGN AT AN AUCTION OF AN ANTIQUE STORE IN EL RENO, OKLA THAT WAS CLOSING.  THE SIGN IS 33″ BY 57″.  IT IS PORCELAIN  AND IS IN NEW CONDITION.  IT WAS MADE BY STOUT SIGN CO., ST LOUIS, MO.  THERE WAS A YOUNGER LADY BIDDING AGAINST ME, AND WHEN THE BIDDING WAS OVER, SHE CAME TO ME AND SAID SHE REALLY WANTED THE SIGN.  SHE SAID HER GRANDFATHER STARTED THE AAA ROOT BEER COMPANY.  BY READING THE COMMENTS ABOVE, IT COULD HAVE BEEN NANCY LISLE.  SHE CONGRATULATED ME FOR BEING THE NEW OWNER OF THE SIGN.  I PURCHASED IT FOR MY RESTAURANT, AND DISPLAYED THE SIGN ON THE WALL UNTIL I SOLD THE RESTAURANT SEVERAL YEARS AGO.  I STILL HAVE THE SIGN.  I PAID $350.00 FOR IT.  I HAD MANY COMMENTS FROM MY CUSTOMERS ABOUT AAA ROOT BEER, AND HOW GOOD IT WAS

Chief chemist was Russell Baker, bottled the concentrated syrups into 5gal glass bottles by Ernie and Ernies son . The product was sold to drive ins and restaurant throughout Central Ok. The product was bottled 2 quart bottle at the old Bond Bread Plant NE 12 . Triple AAA was  canned in Texas were they believe formula was  stolen, and then  canned by competitor companies also. Mr Brown was Charles “Dude” Brown, who was my Uncle. His main job was building and refurbishing the barrels and stainless insides.   My Father Bill Pettit worked there also, as did I during the summer year of about 1965 during school break.  I still have a small root beer barrel that my uncle Dude gave me.  I also remember all those people well.
