The Singapore Sling is truly an exotic cocktail. As the name suggests, it was created in Singapore by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon (he worked at the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel). The precise date is not known, but the creation of the concoction took place some time between 1900 and 1915.
As with other cocktails, there are many versions of the recipe. And although the Raffles Hotel offers a recipe card for the drink, they do admit that the original recipe has been lost. This is not a bad thing, as true cocktail aficionados typically tinker with ratios and different juices anyway. Below we present just one of the favored recipes out there. So get mixing and enjoy this one in a tall tiki style mug!
1 ½ ounce gin
1 ounce lemon juice
¼ ounce sugar syrup
1 ½ teaspoon powdered sugar
2 ounces club soda
1/2 ounce cherry brandy
Combine gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup and powdered sugar in an ice-filled shaker. Shake well and strain into a tall Tiki mug or Collins glass. Top with club soda. Pour cherry brandy over the back of a spoon to “float” it on top. Garnish with a cherry and a lemon slice.
