In celebration of its 100th birthday, Formica has introduced a new collection featuring retro designs and colors. Revealed today at the International Builder’s Show today the collection was designed by renowned firm Pentagram, and will be available beginning January 31, 2013.
In celebrating 100 years, Formica Group introduced 12 new retro-style patterns.
According to Formica Group, this 2013 Anniversary Collection reflects on the Formica® brand and history. Formica invented laminate, but credits designers for its popularity and continued use. Pentagram is the world’s largest independent design consultancy, and partner Abbott Miller designed the patterns exclusively for Formica. He credits the laminates limitless design potential as his inspiration.
“The heart and soul of Formica laminate is a printed sheet. Pattern and color are intrinsic to the culture of the company, so exploring the translucency of ink and the interaction of pattern and color was a natural area for me.”
Throughout this year, Formica will focus on a “Formica Forever 100 Years” logo, and a book that chronicles a century of design and business will be released mid-2013.
The New Designs
The designs and color schemes represent post-war decor through the early ’70s.
As described and featured in a press release, here’s what we can look forward to this year:
Ellipse – This design uses the “hidden oval” in the Formica logo to create a series of layered strands that ripple across the surface.
The Ellipse Design is available in White, Gray and Red.
Endless – This design creates a digital grain from bars that alternately layer and punch through a colored base. The result is a continuous tone-on-tone, architectural pattern that provides visual interest at close range and, from a distance, provides a geometric texture.
The Endless Design is available in graytone, smoke and indigo.
Dotscreen – Features luminous colors with extremely fine micro-dots in continuous ribbons.
The Dotscreen Design is available in aqua, mint and tangelo.
Halftone - Features “near-bright” colors patterned with various sizes of toned dots, reminiscent of halftone printing screens.
The Halftone Design is available in blueberry, citrus and tangelo.
