Vintage U.S. Mailbox

This is a mailbox that we restored that dates to about the late 1950s or 60s. The style is a lot like the design conceived by David. C. Owens, postmaster from 1906 to 1914 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He produced a new look for US postal boxes after receiving feedback from patrons that the existing boxes were unattractive. The design he developed is referred to as an Owens-style mailbox. These cast iron mailboxes were produced for the US Post Office Department until some time in the 1940s.

Our mailbox is done in the Owens style, but dates to much later than the cast iron boxes. This box was constructed of sheet metal. The colors we used are close to what would have been done on the original. The manufacturer is unknown.

This item is not for sale. We show restored items in our museum for viewing, information and to further the hobby of collecting and restoration. We also just want to share the photos of the many items we have restored over the years.
